The Museum at Fombrauge

When the vineyard was reorganised, archaeological remains were found.
Scientists at the Archaeology Institute in Bordeaux thus came to excavate the sites and found remains dating back to the Iron Age in the most exceptional state of preservation ever found in Aquitaine.
In this museum, you can see a copy of several objects found by the archaeologists and the skeleton of a teenager found almost intact.

The discovery of this skeleton during the excavation of the plateau showed the hitherto unsuspected existence of a wall surrounding the rocky spur. This five-metre wide parapet is composed of large blocks that were damaged on their internal face by subsequent ploughing.
The body of a teenager lying against the inner side of the parapet was found under the demolished blocks of the walls (photo). This is the most complete burial site of the First Iron Age ever excavated in Aquitaine. The decomposition of the body took place in a closed environment, but all the evidence points to a very simple burial without offerings, which was most unusual in those days.
